More than 100 million AK-47s have been manufactured, making it the “most popular” firearm in the world. Designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, it is deemed the most reliable gun. Put into service in 1947, the AK-47 saw its first action in the Chinese communist revolution.
The AK-47 appears on the flag of Mozambique which was adopted in 1983. It is the only national flag in the world to feature such a modern rifle. Although a competition was held to design a new flag for Mozambique in 2005, the proposal to change the flag was rejected by the FRELIMO-led parliament. The flag remains the same today.
