Want to feel uncomfortable at your Halloween party? It’s bad enough that costumes sometimes unleash parts of people’s personalities that are better off hidden. But imagine looking up and seeing Ray Rice–the disgraced, wife-beating former Baltimore Raven–walking in the door. That’s going to happen this Halloween in some sad places, even though it’s too soon. Even though NEVER is too soon for a Ray Rice costume. If you’re thinking of it, remember that you’re not on Saturday Night Live–and even they don’t satirize domestic abuse.
Making fun of a situation like Ray Rice abusing his wife is impossible–there’s no fun to be made. It isn’t funny. It isn’t cool. And if the goal of your costume each year is for people to say “that guy is crazy,” a Ray Rice outfit will do it. But they won’t mean it in a funny, charming way.
