Dredd is like kale. Only a small group of foodie cognescenti liked kale at first and then all of a sudden it was everywhere. Dredd is looking to follow the same route to popularity. At least Adi Shankar, the producer of the new Dredd TV series, hopes the Dredd story is Kale-like. When the Dredd movie came out in 2012, many of the fans who saw it loved it. But there just weren’t as many as hoped for–and Dredd, despite Karl Urban’s star presence, did only $35.6 million at the box office.
A sequel seemed unlikely, despite the loyalists, even though comic book adaptations are as hot right now as Scarlett Johansson. But the big screen is no longer the only game in town for the likes of Judge Dredd to get his action on. (Look at Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) The Wrap reports that producer Shankar has been secretly working on making the hoped-for sequel into a miniseries “centering on the Dark Judges.” It’s supposed to be a seven-part series. Ready later this year. Grab some kale chips.
