While promoting her global tour, Miley Cyrus stopped by the Australian Opera House to be interviewed live for a local morning talk show. The pop star was impressed that the Matt Lauer of Down Under knew that “twerking is so yesterday.” She replied, “I’m glad you know that, because so many people are living in the past.”
On a platform outside of the opera house, decorated with rainbow colored balloons, Cyrus showed the TV hosts how to do the NaeNae. Wearing a long green sequined robe and white tube socks pulled to her knees, Cyrus got up and raised her hand and then swayed her hips sideways and up and down. She admitted to not knowing what the name NaeNae means. She said her LA Bakers dance team taught it to her. Cyrus also reported that she keeps doing it at her shows but no one is doing it back to her. Maybe it’s time for her to ditch the new dance and focus on that stand-up comedy career she said she’s eager to try out.
P.S. The NaeNae dance came out in 2013 with the song “Drop That NaeNae” by hip hop group We Are Toonz. NaeNae refers to the Martin character Sheneneh Jenkins (played by Martin Lawrence in drag).
