Way back in the 1960s researchers found two gigantic dinosaur arms–8 feet long–in the southern Gobi desert in Mongolia. (Way back is a relative term, of course, the arms were 70 million years old.) Scientists have wondered ever since about what kind of creature these mysterious arms belonged to–they were unlike any other dinosaur bones found. Finally a team of Korean and Japanese researchers found two entire skeletons of the dinosaur that the arms belonged to.
The find changes a lot about the kinds of shapes we know dinosaurs can come in. This 36-foot long dinosaur is so strange-looking–with a horse face, a giant camel’s hump on its back, short legs, long tail and long arms–that even Jim Henson’s people couldn’t have made it up. The scientific findings were published yesterday by the journal Nature.
