A few days ago it was reported that Canadian pop singer Avril Lavigne joined the long list of celebrities victimized in “the fappening.” Allegedly photos of Lavigne in lingerie cuddling with a Hello Kitty plush doll were leaked and posted on 4chan. They aren’t as scandalous as Kaley Cuoco’s or Jennifer Lawrence’s hacked photos because Lavigne isn’t nude. With white-hot careers Cuoco and Lawrence don’t need any extra exposure, so to speak. But Lavigne’s career could probably do with a little scandal right now–at least in North America.
The photos of Lavigne were probably taken while shooting her “Hello Kitty” music video from April 2014. In the video Lavigne wears faux garter belt tights and dances with four grimacing Asian dancers. When released, the video was called an “embarrassment in any language” by Billboard, and Entertainment Weekly wondered whether the video was “offensive.” Her PR people probably wish the hacked pictures showed Lavigne with Mickey Mouse or Snoopy. Her latest album, Avril Lavigne, has the worst sales figures of her career in North America. But the Hello Kitty containing album went platinum in Japan.
