ABC’s new half-hour family comedy Black-ish is about the Johnsons, an upper class black family living in a predominately white suburb. Anthony Anderson (All About the Andersons, The Bernie Mac Show) plays the husband/father Andre ‘Dre’ Johnson, and Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends) plays the wife/mother. As a successful black man, “an oddity” he calls himself, Johnson is torn on how to raise their four privileged adorable children (2 boys, 2 girls) and keep their cultural identity. He wants his family to be black, not blackish.
When his son wants to play field hockey instead of basketball, Johnson initially complains but then comes around. Even when his son wants a Bar Mitzvah, Johnson (with the approval of his father, Laurence Fishburne) finds middle ground. Johnson throws his son a Bro Mitzvah. The father and son wear matching Adidas track suits, Run DMC heavy frames and gold chains.
