There aren’t a lot of females nominated in the writing and directing category of this year’s Emmy Awards but there are deserving female actors worthy of the golden statuette. One of those is Kate McKinnon, nominated for her character sketches on Saturday Night Live. She does a mean Angela Merkel and a hilarious Justin Bieber. Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast writes, “Spoofing everyone from Ellen to Ann Romney, Kate McKinnon has proved she may be the funniest cast member on SNL.”
If McKinnon does win an Emmy this Monday, August 25, she will be the first SNL regular cast member to win an Emmy since Gilda Radner’s 1978 win. But the competition is fierce. SNL alum Kristen Wiig is also nominated for her Outstanding Lead Actress role in the sleeper miniseries The Spoils of Babylon (a spoof of The Thorn Birds), starring Tobey Maguire, Tim Robbins, Jessica Alba, and Will Ferrell. It premiered on IFC in January 2014. A sequel, The Spoils Before Dying, will debut in summer 2015.
