Bill Gates has joined fellow billionaire Michael Bloomberg in spending his money to try to limit gun violence. AP reports that Gates and his wife Melinda have donated $1 million to a Washington state campaign to expand background checks on gun purchases. Gates’ donation follows that of his former partner, the other Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who’s already given $500,000 to the cause.
Initiative 594 would require background checks prior to all gun sales in the state. It would also close a loophole currently being exploited by gun sellers at gun shows, where background check requirements are more lax. Private sales would also be targeted. AP reports that the campaign has brought in “nearly $6 million” so far.
