Today Microsoft announced it will close the doors of its 200-person TV and film studio, Xbox Entertainment Studios, after two years. Although projects include a sexy Halo television series produced by Steven Spielberg, even that kind of Hollywood clout couldn’t turn the studio around. Don’t worry, Spielberg fans, Microsoft promises that Spielberg’s live-action Halo series will be completed.
Xbox Entertainment Studios will also complete the six film documentary series “Signal to Noise,” produced by Simon Chinn (Searching for Sugar Man, Man on Wire). The first film of the series, “Atari: Game Over,” unveils the truth behind the legend of Atari burying millions of unsold “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial” video game cartridges in a New Mexico landfill. The series was written and directed by screenwriter and video game writer Zak Penn (The Fantastic Four, X-Men: The Official Game).
