Priscilla Matuson of Egg Harbor Township, NJ was surprised to learn that her local food bank wouldn’t accept canned food. It was then that she realized most homeless people don’t have a can opener. A woman of action, she has taken the initiative to collect gently-used and/or new can openers from, well, everyone she knows. And those she doesn’t know via her blog Glutenfreeveganmom.com. (She, her husband and two preschool daughters suffer from Celiac Disease.)
Cash donations to her “Open Your Heart: Can Openers to Feed the Homeless” campaign are being used to buy P-38 can openers, which were designed by the US military during World War II, and today cost approximately 48 cents each. Known for its toughness and dependability, the P-38 is also known as a “John Wayne.”
