Judd Apatow directed Doc & Darryl, a 30 for 30 film for ESPN starring former New York Mets stars Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry. Both men have fallen since the World Series in 1986. Both men continue to struggle with substance addiction and legal troubles, among other devastating personal losses that usually come with addiction.
[Gooden wrote his memoir, Doc: A Memoir, in 2013]
In May, New York Daily News writer John Harper caught up with Gooden. He met Doc at his Jersey City apartment which he shares with his 26-year-old daughter Ashley. Gooden said he hasn’t used drugs in five years. But it’s not easy. He says he still has the urge to use. Gooden said: “The strip club is my biggest weakness. I go in there…that day I might be OK. The next day I might be ok, but eventually it’s going to catch me. Now I’ve gotten to the point where I say I’m not going to do it.” The 30 for 30 film Doc & Darryl will air July 14 at 9pm EST on ESPN.
