Unlike in most TV commercials that have a powerful musical element, the new ad for Hershey’s (see below) puts the performers front and center. The duo doesn’t appear on camera, but their names do. That’s because the song, “Higher Love,” is being performed by rock legend Steve Winwood and his daughter Lilly Winwood. Not only is the father-daughter collaboration sonically splendid, the mini-narrative in the spot deals with a father-daughter moment that finds a perfect echo in the music.
Much of the flagrant heart-tugging going on in the ad has to do with Lilly Winwood’s sonorous vocals, which both honor and alter the song her father made famous in the mid-1980s. Lilly Winwood was born in Nashville, where her mother is from, but grew up in Gloucestire, England. She started playing music at the age of 9, and as an adult moved back to Nashville to make it as a professional musician. The 20-year-old isn’t hard to find playing gigs in the Nashville area, including recently at Nashville scene spot Antique Archaeology. You can get Lilly Winwood gig info at her Facebook page and here’s her SOUNDCLOUD.
