Actress Kristen Johnston is best known for her roles as Sally in 3rd Rock from the Sun and more recently as Holly in The Exes. But she’s also an author. In her autobiography Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster, Johnston writes about her addiction to alcohol and pills which started when she was a teenager in high school.
Now sober, Johnston is executive director of SLAM, a nonprofit organization that is creating New York City’s first recovery supported tract within a high school. SLAM’s first collaboration will be with Lavelle Prep in Staten Island. At Lavelle, “SLAM will act in an advisory capacity as well as fund-raising to provide much needed support, including an on-site CASAC (certified addiction and substance abuse counselor).”
