Steph Curry didn’t waste anytime showing the Warriors new arena in San Francisco what he means to do there. The Warriors-Lakers preseason match was just seconds old when Curry — in traffic — launched a 40-footer that failed to catch iron. Ya ready for me? the 2x NBA MVP and 3x NBA champion seemed to be telling the new court and the fans. Cause I’m gonna light this place up.
It’s called a heat check, firing from that deep to see if you’re really that hot. Thing is, with mortal players, they only do it after they get hot. Curry evidently enters the game feeling the fire, even in a brand new arena.
The Chase Center hummed in anticipation as the ball was in the air — and it was airborne a long time. But the crowd didn’t get to explode in a roar as it will later in the season as Curry works his longball magic. It may have been an airball from Curry, but it was an airball with a message. The announcers laughed, saying he was just “testing out the new digs.” Indeed, he was.
