Many NBA fans think R.J. Barrett is the best Knicks draft pick since Patrick Ewing. Others are hoping he simply proves more valuable to lifting the beleaguered franchise beyond where the departed Kristaps Porzingis was able to take it, after being drafted very high by then GM Phil Jackson.
But with the future unknown, only the present exists — and Knicks fans hungry for something other than unmitigated failure are more than ready for Barrett’s Madison Square Garden magic. Count Knicks superfan and Hollywood/NBA icon Spike Lee among them. Lee was Drake before Drake was a teenager, driving the Knicks courtside fanfare the way the Canadian singer now stomps about in Toronto.

Barrett went No. 3 in the draft after his Duke teammate — and roommate — Zion Williamson went No. 1. (And yet, Knicks fans take a deep breath, Duke still didn’t win the national title.)
Barrett led the Duke team in scoring, in fact, despite Williamson’s presence. Spike Lee knows one thing for sure about Barrett, He Got Game. About the championship dreams of the Knicks he knows something else: He’s Gotta Have It! Lee might also add, being a style icon himself, that Barrett’s got style. Check out that suit, hot pink head to toe.
