Let’s get the Hall of Fame thing in the title out of the way first. No, Pau Gasol is not yet in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. But that is only because he’s not yet eligible — he’s still looking forward to next season with the Bucks. The day Gasol is eligible for the Hall of Fame, he’ll be voted in — he’s an international superstar and a 2x NBA Champion. He’s a lock. Now to Giannis.
Writing for The Players Tribune, Gasol convincingy asserts that his teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo is this year’s NBA MVP. Gasol compares Giannis to a lot of players, but most notably he compares him to Shaquille O’Neal. It’s notable because nobody ever gets compared to Shaq. Shaq was so unique, so huge, so dominant, so different. Oh wait, that describes Giannis too. Here’s Gasol on the comparison:
“… think of young Shaq. Do you remember Shaq, when he was at LSU? Do you remember Shaq in his first few years with the Magic? Can you think of another player since with that size, with that agility? Who dunks harder and more often? To me, the list is one player long — it’s my Greek teammate.”
