Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard is a legit hip hop artist who brings his A-Game to the recording studio. He’s not just a hack and a dilettante on the mic — Dame D.O.L.L.A., as he goes, is for real, having dropped two full length LPs while rising and rising to NBA superstardom in Portland.
[Dame’s debut LP The Letter O]
The popular Sway’s Universe YouTube called “Damian Lillard Is The Best Rapper In The NBA! Here’s The Proof!” has been viewed more than 9 million times people. Dame has the same kind of flow in the studio as he does on the court.
But basketball and loyalty come before anything else for Lillard, who has embraced his adoptive home and his calling to bring an NBA title to the Rose City. He is so committed to Portland and to Trail Blazers history that he named the very first tune on his 2016 full-length debut LP The Letter O — after Portland’s most famous sports hero, basketball royalty Bill Walton. Walton brought the last title to Portland in the late 70s. Long before Lillard was born.
Lillard says in the tune: “Tryin’ to bring a chip to Portland just like Walton did.” And you believe this man — that that’s what he’s on earth for. Hey, it’s Dame D.O.L.L.A.’s #1 song on his very first album. He calls it “Bill Walton”. He’s saying something.
