On The Simpsons episode “D’oh Canada,” while visiting Niagara Falls on a family vacation, before Lisa is mistakenly granted political asylum in Canada she meets American children’s book author and YA novelist Judy Blume. She’s known for her books Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret, Blubber, and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. When Marge goes to rescue Lisa, the whole family re-evaluates their love for America as they navigate the polite Canadian landscape.

In real life, in February 2017, right after U.S. President Donald Trump signed the travel ban, Australian children’s book author Mem Fox was detained by U.S. border control at Los Angeles airport. The 70-year-old author of Possum Magic and Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes said, “I have never in my life been spoken to with such insolence, treated with such disdain, with so many insults and with so much gratuitous impoliteness.” She added, “In that moment I loathed America.” Note: Blume is not a fan of Trump, either (see below). The Simpsons airs Sundays at 8 pm on FOX.
