“No, I’ve already given it away,” NBA superstar Dwyane Wade told 23-year-old guard Emmanuel Mudiay, a next generation Knicks star. The scene was Saturday night at the Madison Square Garden, the “world’s most famous arena.” The most famous jersey in the world’s most famous arena that night was Dwyane Wade’s, and that’s what Mudiay had asked for before hearing the bad news from the Heat superstar — that Wade had already committed to giving away the game jersey he wore for his last game ever at MSG. (In case you live beneath a rock without wifi, Wade is retiring after this season.) Wade might save the line for his final retirement speech. “No, I’ve already given it away” would be a good way to describe his departure after nearly two decades of NBA play.
Everywhere Wade goes there’s fanfare and farewells, and since the Knicks are further from the playoffs than Lyft is from profitability, Wade won’t see the Knicks again. Mudiay had the temerity to ask though. And if some are thinking Mudiay was naive in thinking Wade was just going to hand over his highly-coveted jersey, other fans think Mudiay’s aggressive play bodes well for the Knicks future. You gotta ask. You gotta try.
