NBA superstar Blake Griffin seemed like he was going to be a Hollywood mainstay when he was a LA Clippers high-flying slam-dunking wunderkind. But it turns out the unexpected trade to the Detroit Pistons really suits Griffin’s style even better. Sure, he’s a charming self-aware guy who could really sell a Kia in his Hollywood phase. But the working class ethos of a tough town like Detroit, a town that keeps bouncing back no matter what, that’s an even better match for the hardworking Griffin — a coach’s son — than Tinseltown ever was.

After a strong year for a rebuilding Pistons team that Griffin led into the playoffs, Pistons head coach Dwayne Casey said of Griffin: “That young man has given us everything he has…He just has a presence that we can’t replace with anybody.” And former teammate Jamal Crawford agree with Casey, saying Griffin was “the truth” and “such a special player.”
Griffin gave a postseason thank you to fans and cemented his position with the franchise, letting them know he’ll be around for the long run: “detroit, not how we wanted it to end but i wanted to say thank you for the support all season long. this year was just the beginning for us. we will continue to lay the foundation to bring this franchise back to where it belongs. you all were incredible and showed up in a big big way when we needed you the most. thank you for embracing me and our team. can’t wait to get back to work.”
