The sneak peek look at the highly anticipated Artemis Fowl movie sets a strong, spooky, great-matters-at-stake tone, with the narrator intoning: “I warn you boy. You are not prepared for the truth behind what you seek. Now you will believe, Artemis Fowl.”
If that’s not enough, that warning follows an utterly unambiguous opening line: “Our world (pregnant pause) has never been in more danger.” One of the great characters in teen literature, the martial arts master Domovoi Butler — who serves as Artemis Fowl’s bodyguard — is embodied by British-Nigerian actor Nonso Anozie. Anozie is best known in the US as Xaro Xhoan Daxos of Game of Thrones. Fun fact: the famous bodyguard in the Artemis Fowl books is 6’10” tall. Anozie gets close: the 39-year-old actor is listed at 6’6″.
Director Kenneth Branagh is expected to bring his customary Shakespearean scale to the sci-fi fantasy flick. Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Josh Gad and Judi Dench are on board — so pros abound. Those looking for an Anozie primer will note he starred as Tank in RocknRolla, Sergeant Dap in Ender’s Game, and as Abraham Kenyatta in Zoo. Eoin Colfer’s magnificent series of Artemis Fowl books (see links above) has enchanted young readers for decades now. The movie hits theaters August 2019.
