It’s been an exciting year for American Idol on the new network (ABC), with new judges (Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan), and the introduction to live coast-to-coast voting. American Idol will continue to surprise viewers at home on the May 6 episode when the Top 7 contestants will pay a tribute to the late great Prince.
Each singer will perform a Prince song, and Prince’s former drummer (and fiance) Sheila E. will perform on the Idol stage, too. Idol has a long history with Prince. During Season 5 of Idol (2006), the Purple One made a surprise visit on the show and performed lived in front of the audience and Idol judges (Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul).
[Prince’s 3121 album includes “Lolita” and “Satisfied”]
[Prince also designed a women’s perfume called 3121]
Prince sang two songs from his 2006 album 3121 (his 31st studio album!) — “Lolita” and the soulful jam “Satisfied.” Those backup singers/dancers are twin sisters Maya McClean and Nandy McClean from Australia, otherwise known as The Twinz. RIP Prince. (P.S. Taylor Hicks won American Idol that season.) American Idol airs Sundays at 8pm on ABC.
