In the Season 8 Blue Bloods episode “Risk Management,” the former Inspector General of the NYPD, Kelly Peterson, returns. Last time Peterson appeared was on Season 4, when she told Commissioner Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) she was resigning because she admitted to not having enough “professional animosity” toward the NYPD. Plus, she was falling for Frank. (The job of the Inspector General is to investigate corruption, fraud, waste and abuse in the NYPD.)
Now, facing a lawsuit from an injured drug dealer who fell down a flight of stairs when being chased by cops, Frank doesn’t want give the perp a $20,000 settlement. “It looks like we’re paying off these perps in order to avoid a hearing in open court,” says Frank. He wants to push back. Instead of going to the Mayor, who’s not engaged on the subject, he turns to Kelly Peterson. (Before becoming Inspector General of the NYPD, Peterson used to work in the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office in New Jersey.) Peterson is portrayed by 2x Tony Award winner Bebe Neuwirth (Sweet Charity, Chicago). The Broadway star is known for her TV roles on Madam Secretary (Nadine Tolliver), and as Dr. Lilith Sternin on Frasier and Cheers, among others. Blue Bloods airs Fridays at 10pm on CBS.
