In the Young Sheldon episode “Gluons, Guacamole, and the Color Purple,” Sheldon (Iain Armitage) finds himself no longer academically challenged at Medford High School. So he sits in on a college class taught by Dr. John Sturgis. Sturgis is portrayed by legendary actor and writer Wallace Shawn.

As an actor, Wallace Shawn is known for his roles on Mozart in the Jungle (Winslow), The Good Wife (Charles Lester), Gossip Girl (Cyrus Rose), The L Word (William Halsey), Crossing Jordan (Dr. Howard Stiles), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Zek), and Clueless (Mr. Hall), among many others. Shawn is also well recognized for his roles in the films The Princess Bride (Vizzini), My Dinner with Andre, Vanya on 42nd Street, and Woody Allen’s Manhattan (Diane Keaton’s ex-husband Jeremiah). Or you might recognize his voice from Toy Story (Rex) and/or The Incredibles (Gilbert Huph). The actor/playwright went to Harvard, Oxford and taught English in India on a Fulbright scholarship. He is the son of legendary The New Yorker editor, William Shawn. Young Sheldon airs Thursdays at 8:30pm on CBS, right after The Big Bang Theory, and right before Mom.
