Carol Daly of Staten Island, New York was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 10 years ago. Since then, every year, 60 Minutes has interviewed Carol and her caregiver husband, former NYPD police officer Mike Daly. CBS News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook says, “Even though this is intensely personal they (the Dalys) wanted all of us to see the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s on each of them over a decade.” The Alzheimer’s Association told 60 Minutes it’s not aware of any other video study of this length documenting the progression of the disease.
Dr. Jonathan LaPook is a board-certified physician in internal medicine and gastroenterology. The Yale and Columbia educated doctor is Professor of Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. He joined CBS News in 2006. He has won two Emmy Awards for his coverage but not as many as his father-in-law Norman Lear, the famous writer/producer of All in the Family, Good Times, The Jeffersons and more. Dr. LaPook is married to Lear’s daughter Kate. 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7pm on CBS.
