Angel Bonilla is the 31-year-old singer from the Philippines competing on The Voice, Season 14. For her blind audition she sang Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down” which got Adam Levine to turn his chair. After her performance, Angel explains to The Voice coaches and audience that she was born Carlos. She said growing up in a conservative Catholic family wasn’t easy, she says her father was “puzzled” when he first saw her as a girl. But now, she has their support and Angel wants to make her father proud.

In the video interview below, Angel tells her fascinating life story. She moved to the United States when she was 15. In order to pursue her music career on The Voice, she left her job as an assistant makeup artist and her career as a phlebotomist. Angel says she has a degree in phlebotomy (drawing blood for testing, transfusions, research, donations, etc.) and has been working in the medical industry for five years. For the Battle Round, Angel faces Gary Edwards. Together they sing the epic duet “When You Believe” made famous by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston for the 1998 animated film The Prince of Egypt. The Voice airs Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 8pm on NBC.
