Former football enigma Tim Tebow will see soon some pitches in the big leagues, says New York Mets GM Sandy Alderson. Alderson, who previously acknowledged that signing Tebow was partially due to his celebrity, predicted Tebow will play in the Bigs. That means the former football star will do better than Michael Jordan managed to do during Jordan’s baseball sojourn. Jordan famously retired from the NBA to try to make it in Major League Baseball, but His Airness returned to hoops after languishing in the minors. (It worked out well for Jordan, who won three more NBA championships; Tebow is not presently being lured back to the NFL.)
Alderson has also said that the Mets signed Tebow because he’s a good guy. Alderson thinks the good guy will get his MLB shot, despite being 31 and having a mediocre — so far — minor league career. Why? Because Tebow sells jerseys and excitement and Major League Baseball is an entertainment business, first and foremost. How successful can Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, be as a Major Leaguer? Nobody really knows, though hardly anyone lacks an opinion. As one commenter on the video below says: “The dude is a hell of an athlete. You have to give him that.”
