VegasStrong is the never-quit attitude embodied in the hastag. The GoFundMe campaign to help the victims of the tragic Las Vegas mass shooting could really be called VegasGettingStronger. Because that’s the aim of Steve Sisolak, the Clark County Commission Chair from Las Vegas who set up the GoFundMe campaign. It states somberly: “Funds will be used to provide relief and financial support to the victims and families of the horrific Las Vegas mass shooting.” The Las Vegas Shooting GoFundMe page has now been shared nearly 300K times, and has raised nearly $10 million of its $15 million goal — a goal it will certainly meet.

The Sheriff and I have set up an account to aid survivors and their families. I’ve pledged the first $10K. https://t.co/UMcQtZLgmr

The Milwaukee-born Sisolak, who is a candidate for governor, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and attended graduate school at UNLV, which both his daughters also went to school. Sisolak ia a big proponent of public schools and vows to restore funding to the stripped public education system in Nevada if he’s elected. Commissioner Sisolak sends out a monthly newsletter to his constituents that generally delivers cheerful news — and reading the latest one shows how quickly things have changed in Las Vegas. The last newsletter starts out with a “Happy Halloween” greeting and includes Sisolak talking about far happier things like the new stadium for the NFL’s Raiders, who are soon to call Las Vegas home. (see video below.) Sisolak’s Twitter page, which has 11K followers, also displays his advocacy for government transparency:
Transparency at its finest. I think this is the 6th press conference @LVMPD has held. pic.twitter.com/dLxMewtU6b
