This Is Us Season 2 promises to be just as deep, riveting and complicated as Season 1 — with incredibly rich story lines giving viewers emotional whiplash. One potent talisman that has great significance in This Is Us is the moon necklace Jack buys for Rebecca, something we know (because we’ve seen the future) that she will keep and cherish forever. Jack, struggling to contain his alcoholism, makes the purchase in a jewelry store after telling the salesman that diamonds aren’t special enough. “Diamonds are for anyone” and “my wife is not anyone,” Jack informs the salesman, telling him Rebecca is a combination of Mary Tyler Moore and Farrah Fawcett.
Jack chooses the moon necklace, which he gives to Rebecca at the same time he promises he’ll stop drinking. The inspiration is obviously “Moonshadow“, the Cat Stevens song Rebecca performed in the bar the night they met. (In the video below, the stage is set for their cute meet when Rebecca ditches her bad dinner date — start watching at the 2:45 mark.) The moon necklace is just another sign of the intricacies the show’s writers are working with and how every second is packed with content on this exemplary drama.
