In the Season 8 premiere episode of The Walking Dead, “Mercy,” Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is seen standing on the back of a pick-up truck and heard preaching. He addresses his armed group including Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) and says with several dramatic pregnant pauses, “When I first met him, (pause), Jesus said that my world was gonna to get a whole lot bigger.” Rick believes that they have “found that world, (pause), found each other, (pause), and that bigger world is ours by right.” he re-emphasizes after another pause, “It’s ours by right!”
Rick goes on to say that “Only one person has to die,” (pause), “And I will kill myself. I will,” (pause), “I will.” Rick uses the dramatic effect of the pregnant pause like a preacher at the pulpit. And in the beginning of the trailer (below), before talking about self sacrifice, Rick takes on a Jesus-like pose — head down, eyes closed, spikes of dark hair fall on his forehead appear like a crown of thorns. Coincidence? The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm on AMC.
