Dublin’s Gate Theatre is being transformed into an elegant Hamptons mansion for the summer, for what is surely going to be the city’s hottest ticket. Director Alexander Wright’s production of The Great Gatsby sees F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale of the lifestyles of the rich and famous come alive. The audience will be part of the action as the entire theatre (including backstage) is turned into Jay Gatsby’s lavish home for a night of jazz music, flappers, cocktails and scandal. The Gate is encouraging ticket-holders to dress in 1920s styles, and dancing shoes are obligatory.
The Gate’s innovative production is the first since Selina Cartmell took over as Artistic Director. As the historic theatre’s first female boss, she brings a fresh energy to the Gate. Follow-up productions in the 2017-2018 season include The Red Shoes, Look Back in Anger, and The Rape of Lucrece. The Great Gatsby opens on July 12th and runs until September 16th.
