Talking during a Spurs Las Vegas Summer League game, Spurs GM R.C. Buford told NBA TV that while “you never know with restricted free agency” he hopes to have Jonathan Simmons in a Spurs uniform when the season starts. Simmons, Buford says, has had a “terrific development growth with us” and that Jonathan has been a “big part of our success.” (The Spurs have had consecutive 60 win seasons.)
Simmons is a testament to the Spurs unique ability to spot and nurture underappreciated talent — and he was at times the most explosive Spurs player on the court last season. Interestingly, Buford segued seamlessly from Simmons’ unresolved situation to Manu Ginobili’s forthcoming decision about retirement or another year. “We’re still waiting too on Manu, so, not knowing what Manu’s plans are. Hopefully he’ll come off the beach one day and let us know.” The Spurs will also welcome 31-year-old forward Rudy Gay, who signed last week.
