In the Hawaii Five-0 episode ‘Waimaka ‘ele’ele (Black Tears)’, while Adam (Ian Anthony Dale) finds bone fragments at his new construction job, McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) investigates the murder of one of the last survivors of the USS Arizona. During his investigation he learns about his grandfather’s important role at Pearl Harbor and meets Leonard Patterson who survived the bombing (McGarrett’s grandfather did not).

Leonard Patterson is portrayed by Hal Holbrook. The 92-year-old actor is known for his TV roles on Sons of Anarchy (Nate Madock), Evening Shade (Evan Evans), Designing Women (Reese Watson), and in the TV mini-series North and South (Abraham Lincoln). Fun fact about Holbrook: He won a Tony Award in 1966 for his performance in “Mark Twain Tonight.” Hawaii Five-0 airs Fridays at 9pm on CBS.
