For longtime basketball fans or any new lover of the the game, last night in Oklahoma City was pure magic. Oscar Robertson came to celebrate Russell Westbrook’s matching his signature accomplishment: averaging a triple double (double figures in points, rebounds and assists) for an entire NBA season. Robertson, a Hall of Fame icon known as The Big O, did it during the 1961-62 NBA season. The mark was thought by sports experts to be as untouchable as Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak. Then, you know, Russell Westbrook happened. The likes of Westbrook we haven’t seen in 55 years.
With Robertson looking grand in a suit and Westbrook looking unguardable in his uniform, the two were rightly celebrated by the Thunder. And fans showed the love. Comments ranged from “Be still my heart” to “This is wonderful” to this is a beauty from hoops fan Isaac Hernandez:
