It’s prom time which means TLC is back with its TV special Say Yes to the Dress. Led by TLC fashion director Monte Durham, the network helps 50 deserving teens choose dresses and accessories for their high school proms — and they get makeovers! This year, Monte Durham gets the help of Seventeen magazine’s fashion director Aya Kanai and iconic fashion designer Betsey Johnson who says in the show teaser, “Prom is my gig.”
Betsey Johnson launched her career in the 1960s. She was part of Andy Warhol’s underground scene and in 1969, when she opened her first boutique in New York City, she had Warhol’s It Girl Edie Sedgwick as her house model. In 1978, Johnson started her own fashion line and opened a store in SoHo. Over the years, she opened 65 stores across the country. In 2014, Johnson competed on Dancing with the Stars (Season 19, eliminated week 4). Betsey Johnson is known for doing a cartwheel at the end of her fashion shows (and yes, even at the age of 74, she still does). Say Yes to the Prom airs Saturdays at 8pm on TLC.
