Powerful Republicans like Darrell Issa and John McCain don’t believe it’s time to “move on” past charges of Russian meddling in the American election. Many Americans are terrified that Trump may be under the thumb of Vladimir Putin and other Russian oligarchs because of undisclosed debt his companies owe to the Russians or due to other compromising materials the Russians may possess. Issa told Bill Maher that a Special Prosecutor needs to investigate Trump.

It’s impossible to talk about a Special Prosecutor, of course, without addressing Special Prosecutor Ken Starr‘s famous investigation of Bill Clinton. Starr’s investigation took four years and cost taxpayers $40 million. Starr was given wide latitude to continually expand the scope of his investigation until he finally turned up information that led to Clinton’s impeachment in 1998. (A similarly wide scope given to a Special Prosecutor in a Trump case would presumably result in a look at Trump’s tax returns.) The book that resulted from the Clinton investigation, simply titled The Starr Report, was a national bestseller. A similar book detailing Trump’s every move would likely be the hottest book on the planet, no matter how dry the language. As Trump himself likes to say, he crushes in the ratings.
