Richard Lucas is a proud Oregon Duck. But he’s made room in his big heart for Kansas Jayhawks basketball, where his son Landen Lucas is a senior vying for a national title. Lucas’s split loyalties are both earned. He played for Oregon from 1987-1991 and still works as an analyst for “Talkin’ Ducks” on Comcast. The senior Lucas is also a businessman in Oregon, managing a COUNTRY Financial Agency. And though his part-time gig is “talkin’ Ducks,” his Twitter account also understandably does a lot of retweeting about Kansas and Landen, who’s having a great year.
Richard Lucas was a very accomplished basketball player. The undersized (6’7″) Oregon center was featured in a 1991 LA Times article that called him an “emotional leader” citing his hardworking style. His coach described him as “relentless.” Lucas also had a tremendous shooting percentage and after leaving Oregon he played professionally in Japan (where Landen spent his first years). Lucas often heard the chant “Luuuuuuuuuuuke” as a player and remains a fan favorite to this day.
