James Comey casts a large shadow — not just over the 2016 election and US law enforcement. At 6’8″ tall, the Director of the FBI doesn’t easily fade into the background. Comey is used to having a big profile. He used to be the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, a powerful position currently held by the aggressive Preet Bharara and occupied in the past by well-known operators like Rudy Giuiliani and Mary Jo White. Bharara has been asked by Trump to stay in the position.
Now Comey has reportedly been asked by President Donald Trump to remain Director of the FBI. Trump has ridiculed the intelligence community, including the FBI, especially about findings tying Russian meddling to his election victory. But despite Trump’s suspicions and despite Comey’s being a Barack Obama appointee (2003), Trump has elected to keep Comey on. Trump did not actually say the line about the devil you know being better than the devil you don’t. Also notable is that Comey’s actions eleven days before the election revealing potential new evidence in the Hillary Clinton email scandal, though quickly dismissed, are thought to have influenced the election as much as any Russian hacking.
