Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis is a “riveting” read according to the Wall Street Journal. It’s a book the New York Times says provided a “civilized election guide for an uncivilized election.” So no surprise a book promising to explain the world of people who just elected Donald Trump president would rise to No. 1 on the Amazon bestseller list this week. Described as an “urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country,” Hillbilly is in some ways an atlas of the November 8 election results.
But count on America to keep its perspective. No. 2 on the Amazon bestseller list is the #11 installment of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. Diary of a Wimpy Kid #11: Double Down tells the tale of “middle-school weakling” Greg Heffley’s foray into the movie business. Heffley isn’t the kind of guy Trump likes — the president-elect detests weakness — but both guys know what it’s like to be popular. Wimpy Kid online has drawn more than 80 million visits, and the books have been translated into more than 50 languages.
