On Growing Up Hip Hop, Angela Simmons visits with her uncle Russell Simmons. He asks her questions about her fiance, who he hasn’t yet met. Angela tells him: “Basically, he grew up in a rough neighborhood. He went to jail…” When Russell asks what for, she says for selling drugs. Russell shrugs his shoulder, “I sold drugs. What kinds of drugs?” When she says marijuana, Russell can’t believe he went to jail for selling marijuana. He continues: “Okay, what else?” he asks. Angela says: “There’s stuff floating around that he got in trouble for a domestic violence charge.” Russell, who is sitting in a meditative positive, on his folded legs, is speechless for a few seconds. He asks calmly, “What does he do now?” Angela mentions real estate.
When Russell tells Angela to bring him by so he can meet him, she says he’s in New York, where they just moved. Russell asks rhetorically, “You’re living together out of wedlock?” He smiles and laughs, “Rev is gonna love that.” Growing Up Hip Hop airs Thursdays at 9pm on WE.
