NFL.com writer Chris Wesseling has the usual suspects at the top of his Week 5 shakedown of the NFL MVP race. Von Miller stands alone at the top of the list, the pass rushing genius’s quest to add regular season MVP honors to his Super Bowl 50 MVP honors running full throttle in the early games. Falcons QB Matt Ryan comes in second after laying 571 total yards on the Panthers, who actually play good defense.
Lurking in the middle of the list is third-year Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who’s so far matched his 7 yards per completion average from last year while upping his completion percentage to 68% from 61% a year ago. The 3-1 Raiders have needed Carr’s offense, escaping 28-27 last week against the Ravens making it three straight road wins for the Silver & Black. Carr is simply hard to bring down (sacked twice for a combined loss of 4 yards this season) and very efficient. Raiders take on San Diego next.
“Derek Carr is super competitive…he’s definitely taken a step forward for us.”
