Former San Francisco mayor and current Lt. Governor of California Gavin Newsom was mad as hell and wasn’t going to take it anymore — to borrow a line from Network — when Donald Trump’s attempt at showbiz pizzazz included a famous song by the rock band Queen. Trump appropriated, as many have before, Queen’s “We Are The Champions” as he strolled onto the stage at the RNC in Cleveland. The song features the particularly Trumpian line, “No time for losers.”
Newsom posted about the hypocrisy of Trump borrowing a tune sung by the late great Freddie Mercury, a gay icon who died of AIDS in 1991. Newsom, who while San Francisco mayor performed gay marriages before they were legal, has long been an advocate for gay rights. Newsom was especially critical of the music choice given Trump’s choice of Mike Pence as a running mate, saying Pence has spent his career “looking for opportunities to pass laws that would give others the legal framework to discriminate against LGBT people.” Newsom added that Mercury represented “everything that Mike Pence and Donald Trump are scared of.” Newsom is running for Governor of California.
