The Humans is a play about a working class family that faces illness, disappointment, resentment, and financial problems — among other hardships. The Blake family gathers for Thanksgiving at Brigid Blake’s apartment in Chinatown which she shares with her boyfriend Rich. Brigid’s father Erik is one of the guests. Erik Blake is portrayed by actor Reed Birney who has been nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play. (The Humans is nominated for Best Play.)
Reed Birney is also known for his roles on the TV shows House of Cards (Rep. Donald Blythe), American Odyssey (Senator Darnell), The Blacklist (Tom Connolly), Kings (Minister Forsythe), and Gossip Girl (Mr. Prescott), among others. Fun fact: Birney is married to actress Constance Shulman (Yoga Jones on Orange Is the New Black). The 70th Annual Tony Awards will be televised on Sunday, June 12 at 8pm on CBS.
