“They’ll arrive at your door innocent as children, longing for the past,” James Earl Jones intones in the iconic speech from the movie Field of Dreams. It sounds as sweet as can be, but it’s not pure sugar — that’s what makes Field of Dreams last. There’s also the reality, the commercial aspect: these “innocents” will be asked to come up with $20 a head to get in. That’s part of the wisdom. “They will come” is the famous half. “They will pay” is the other, equally important calculation.
Dodgers announcer and baseball legend Vin Scully has seen more change in baseball than anyone behind a mic — and he knows how true it is that “they will come.” He’s been announcing MLB games for 67 years. So when Scully, a Hall of Famer, delievers the James Earl Jones speech (below) it’s even more powerful, perhaps, than when Darth Vader himself does it. A treat for baseball fans of all ages.
