Both the escape and recapture of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman were dramatic. U.S. and Mexican authorities are revealing more details about the recapture to 60 Minutes correspondent Bill Whitaker. One authority tells Whitaker that El Chapo’s simple tastes helped lure him out. “Tacos, tequila, and chicas,” he explains on camera.
As of May 2016, El Chapo is being held in the Ciudad Juarez jail in northern Mexico near the Texas border, just 9 miles from El Paso, Texas. A Mexican federal judge has cleared El Chapo to be extradited to the U,S. The AP reports that Guzman will likely be tried by the US Attorney’s office in the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn. Six other prosecutors offices are being considered including Chicago and San Diego. But as former federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, Jodi Avergun, says: “[Brooklyn] has the best chance to win and put Chapo in prison for the rest of his life.” Guzman is appealing extradition. 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7pm on CBS.
