Maybe it was for Donald Trump, who knows? He’s always saying things are too politically correct these days. But you can’t accuse Hillary Clinton of being too politically correct anymore after her on-stage “CP Time” joke in New York this week. (Video below.) In a staged setup, NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio apologized for being late to endorse Clinton by saying he was working on “CP time.” CP Time is an old term for “colored people time.” It reinforces a stereotype that people of color — black people, especially — were on their own timetable and often late, with no regard for world’s schedule. It’s not, obviously, a compliment.
The two politicians were on stage with Hamilton actor Leslie Odom, Jr (Aaron Burr) who objected to DeBlasio’s statement. “I don’t like jokes like that,” responded Odom, who was in on it (and in costume). But Clinton chuckled and explained to Odom. CP time, Clinton said, meant “Cautious Politician Time.” Um, no it doesn’t. Even the Clinton-friendly crowd booed the joke. What did they expect? Here it is:
