It’s only been a few hours since the horrific bombings in Brussels, which at the time of writing has claimed 31 victims, and as in the wake of attacks last year in Paris, social media has already responded with an outcry of supportive messages. The hashtags #ILoveBrussels and #PeaceForBrussels are trending; Facebook has activated its safety check; and once again cartoonists are filling their inkwells with tears. Le Monde‘s Plantu drew this simple, heartwarming message to Belgium.
Other satirists have chosen to use a well-known Belgian landmark to express their anger, grief, and resolve. The Manneken Pis is a famous bronze sculpture of a child urinating into a fountain. You can guess the tone of the resulting cartoons. Another well-loved Belgian hero, Tintin, has also been pressed into service.
