For a billionaire trying to write his own ticket, Donald Trump hasn’t spent as much money as you’d think on his campaign. But one place Trump didn’t skimp was on hats. In the 4th quarter of 2015, the Trump campaign reported spending $405,038.84 on hats. His payroll for the period was a mere $306,743.98.

That’s a lot of hats. Rival Ben Carson, who finished fourth in Iowa, spent just $135K on hats. And Ted Cruz, who walked away with Iowa in a surprise? Cruz doesn’t single out hats as a line item. He puts hat expenditures in seven different categories — with shirts, with posters, with pins and more. So it’s hard to say. But those seven categories top $400,00 in Cruz expenditures.
