New York Knicks associate head coach Kurt Rambis, owner of four NBA championship rings as a player, knows basketball. So his assessment, especially as a fellow big forward, of the Knicks’ controversial first round pick Kristaps Ponzingis is something Knicks fans want to listen to carefully.

Early this year another Lakers great — and Rambis teammate during Showtime — James Worthy got a look at the 20-year-old Porzingis during the summer league in Vegas and compared the big youth to Dallas Mavericks mainstay (and former NBA MVP) Dirk Nowitzki and (former NBA MVP) Kevin Durant. Rambis made a similar comparison, saying Porzingis might be a combination of Nowitzki and perennial All-Star Pau Gasol. That’s the good news. But Rambis also told the New York Post that though Porzingis is capable of far more than we’ve seen so far, “some of it won’t come out for three, four, five years, either.”
